Open Letter to Kyle & Jackie O show advertisers

Social Media networks such as Facebook and Twitter have revolutionised the way everyday people connect with hundreds, thousands and even millions of other users beyond their normal boundaries, keeping them informed of events and making their unified voices heard virtually within seconds of sending a mobile tweet or posting a comment to a wall. In 2011, thanks to this instantaneous and simple method of communication Sack Vile Kyle was able to bring together and empower hundreds of people across the globe all outraged by the behaviour of one man, Kyle Sandilands. Facebook and Twitter allowed these people to express their concerns and appeal to sponsors of Kyle’s network bosses at Southern Cross Austereo to disassociate themselves by withdrawing their brand names from any advertising campaign hosted by this unsavoury character. The people were heard and the campaign gathered strength and momentum, and in 2012 the campaign continued with even greater vigour.

Kyle Sandliands returned to air on Monday the 16th January and since his return the number of people calling on Austereo to Sack Vile Kyle, and the number of companies removing their advertising revenue from his show has exploded. To date there are now over 500 people contacting both Austereo and advertisers on a daily basis, reminding them of the 106 companies that have said NO to Kyle's vulgar language and disturbing behaviour. Theirs has been a smart move, redeeming themselves to their customers and minimising damage (to their reputation) that such a bad association can bring to a company’s good name. Are you willing to risk your reputation and loss of customers by riding on the train wreck that is Kyle Sandilands?

KYLE MAINTAINS AUDIENCE BUT SPONSORS FLEE

The Sack Vile Kyle campaign continues its push to see sponsors withdraw financial backing of the Kyle & Jackie O Show. To date over 100 sponsors have withdrawn. Austereo must be feeling the pinch! No doubt they were hoping that things would die down over the Christmas break but unfortunately for them the Sack Vile Kyle campaign was awaiting Kyle’s return. First day back and new major sponsor Jenny Craig withdrew. Since then (16th Jan) another 30+ companies have followed suit.

Campaign leaders Heather, Josie, Kate and Talia are not willing to let this go and have maintained the rage against Kyle with a strong, active membership and twitter following.

Kyle Sandilands will go, the question is how long can Austereo hang out?

4th February statement - 100 sponsors withdrawn

On 16th January 2012 Kyle Sandilands returned to his radio program, the Kyle and Jackie O show, which airs during the much coveted breakfast period reaching millions of Australians on a daily basis. His audience includes young children and teenagers getting ready for school. These impressionable young minds are regularly confronted with discussions on sex acts, murdering transsexuals, as well as Kyle's insults directed toward any female who is carrying extra weight (including his co-host).
In November 2011 these young minds were also subjected to Kyle's rants against an online journalist which included the threat "watch your mouth girl or I will hunt you down". This is not the first time Kyle has threatened a female journalist. In 2006 Kyle stated that he would hire a private investigator to film a pregnant journalist’s family and post it on the Internet. Further to this, in 2007 during an interview with Andrew Denton, Kyle stated he wanted to punch a certain Australian comedian "in the throat". Kyle Sandilands has a continuous history of verbal assaults and threats of violence against people HE sees have done him wrong.
After the November verbal assault and threats and the December 2011 discussion on "killing the trannie", a dedicated group of Australians came together and decided enough was enough. We no longer want our kids to be around other kids who think it’s ok to call someone fat and threaten violence. We do not want our daughters dating boys who think it’s ok to "hunt you down" if our daughters disagree with them. We do not want our sexually and emotionally developing teenagers to think that there is anything wrong with being lesbian or gay, we don't want them to judge bisexual or transgender people, we don't want them to think that it is okay to "kill the trannie".

In the past two months the SACK VILE KYLE campaign has been contacting Austereo’s sponsors and we are pleased to announce that 100 businesses have now withdrawn all financial backing of the Kyle and Jackie O show. The SACK VILE KYLE campaign has persuaded them that advertising on the award winning, popular radio program (and therefore contributing to Kyle's multimillion dollar wage) is not ethical business practice. These companies understand that by advertising on the Kyle and Jackie O show they are supporting this behaviour. They have chosen not to.

Recently the following companies have been contacted via email, twitter and Facebook, and have confirmed that they do not support Kyle Sandilands behaviour and have withdrawn advertising.

Update and thank you 25th Jan

There are many SACK VILE KYLE facebook groups that rose to existence following the November 2011 outbursts from radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands, after he verbally attacked a newspaper journalist for criticising one of his recent television shows.  This vitriolic attack outraged both women and men across the country, and brought together one such group of dedicated Australians who are committed to working together to bring an end to this man’s reign of vulgarity and assault on public airwaves.  It therefore came as no surprise then, that when the women co-founders of this particular group, reached out to friends, family, co-workers and other networks, inviting them to join in their plight to bring this man down, the group membership went from national to global within months. Recent media stories about this group, and the work they have tirelessly put into the group objective, resulted in an explosion of requests to join the group.

We now have over 250 people working around the clock contacting companies that have advertisements on either the Kyle & Jackie O breakfast show or the Kyle & Jackie O website. A lot of the companies that we have approached stated they had not been aware that their advertisements had been placed in spots on the 2Day Fm schedule, that associated them with Kyle and Jackie O. This has been due to 3rd party media buyers, bonus placement spots and other marketing arrangements. These companies have worked with us to identify when and where their advertisements have appeared and have then promptly advised us that they have requested their brand not appear on any show or website associated with Kyle Sandilands.

In recent days our members have contacted and received notification that the following companies have withdrawn advertising from either the Kyle & Jackie O breakfast show, or Kyle & Jackie O website

Austereo sack scapgoats, protect Kyle

If Austereo are losing money and can not guarantee jobs they only have one person to blame for this. If Austereo had heeded the calls of tens of thousands of people in November and December last year, they would not have lost over $10 million in advertising revenue, they would not have had to use old sponsor advertisements. The aim of our campaign is to make it financially unviable to continue to employ Kyle Sandilands. This campaign is working, as evidenced by today’s article in The Australian; however we are ready, willing and able to stop the campaign as soon as Austereo or Kyle Sandilands announce Kyle’s parting from the radio. The departure of two successful, award winning executive directors of Austereo’s advertising agency is due to one person and one person only. We call upon Kyle Sandilands to do the right thing, take personal responsibility and remove himself from 2DayFm and Austereo before more people lose their jobs and livelihood over his remarks

Statement 23rd Jan 2012

On Thursday 19th January the Sydney Morning Herald and its related companies posted a story about our efforts to rid the public airways of Vile Kyle. In the four days that have passed since this story was originally published we have been inundated with requests from people that support our campaign and would like to like. Our group membership has grown from around 60 dedicated members to over 250 people who want to see Kyle gone and who are happy to follow our successful, non-confrontational strategy of hitting Austereo where it hurts, the hip pocket. These members join us in working tirelessly to achieve our goals and their efforts are outstanding. Since the article ran, a further five companies have either withdrawn their advertising or have indicated to us that they are looking into how and where their advertising dollars are spent, after being flooded with requests from our members to justify how supporting Kyle Sandilands can have a positive impact on their brand. We will continue to ask this via email, phone calls, Facebook and letters to those companies that continue to sponsor Kyle. Whilst this campaign is being run by four committed women from Australia, we have been supported by people and groups from all over the world. As well as the members in our group, members and staff from Collective Shout and Change.org have been steadfast in their support of both the four of us and our campaign. www.tinyurl.com/vilekyle (Facebook) @sackvilekylefb (twitter)

Open letter to 2DayFm sponsors

Social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter have revolutionised the way ordinary people are making their voices heard, with hundreds, thousands and even millions of others users across the globe being informed in virtually seconds of a tweet or Facebook comment on any given subject. With the aid of this instantaneous and simple method of communication Sack Vile Kyle was able to gather and empower large numbers of men and women who opposed the appalling behaviour of Kyle Sandilands and express outrage towards (otherwise reputable) sponsors associating their brand name with this unsavoury character.

After Kyle Sandilands’s personal attacks against a popular Australian journalist, a number of Australians used these methods and called on advertisers and sponsors of the Kyle & Jackie O show and take 40 Australia to change their marketing strategies and disassociate themselves from Kyle’s vulgar behaviours and remove their marketing dollars from Kyle’s shows. From this call to action there was a mass exodus of 68 sponsors, the most recent being weight loss giant Jenny Craig, who abandoned sponsorship. Theirs was a smart move, redeeming themselves to their customers and minimising any damage (to their reputation) that such a bad association can bring to a company’s good name. Are you willing to risk your reputation by riding on the train wreck that is Kyle Sandilands?

Media Release 17th Jan 2012

In November and December 2011, after Kyle Sandilands’s personal attacks against a popular Australian journalist, a number of Australians banded together via social media and called on advertisers and sponsors of the Kyle & Jackie O show and take 40 Australia to change their marketing strategies and disassociate themselves from Kyle’s vulgar behaviours and remove their marketing dollars from Kyle’s shows. Over 65 companies responded to these calls including major brands such as Holden Woolworths, Ford, Telstra, Toyota and Vodafone.

On January 16th 2012 Jenny Australia (formally Jenny Craig Australia) announced that they would be major sponsors for 2dayFm and the Kyle and Jackie O show in 2012. The backlash to this was immediate. Utilising social media such as Facebook, Twitter and BlogSpot, SACK VILE KYLE, Collective Shout and change.org called into action hundreds of Australians who were outraged by the partnership of a respected company, whose entire existence is about supporting people and increasing their self esteem, with such an uncouth, sexist person.

Using examples of Kyle’s Daisy the Pig game, comments against former Jenny Craig spokespeople Magda Szubanski and Kate Dearaugo and the comments Kyle made on 23rd November 2011, Jenny was bombarded with phone calls, emails, tweets and Facebook comments from people expressing their repulsion of this partnership. Late last night Jenny posted on their Facebook site and twitter that they listened and were cancelling all sponsorship and advertising immediately.

Without the power this quick call to action and response from people all over Australia, Jenny would still be in partnership with a company that promotes violence against women and believes it is ok to laugh at make hurtful comments about a person’s weight.

Open letter to media personalities

As someone who is a respected media personality, we at Sack Vile Kyle need your support.

As you know following his latest vitriolic attack on a female journalist, Kyle Sandilands continues to provide his employers with more shock than jock. Indeed this man’s deplorable excuse for entertainment has led to public outcry on social media networks Facebook and Twitter, and has spurred the rise of a petition securing over 32,000 signatures from angry Australians demanding the radio station 2dayfm clean up the public air waves and “Sack Vile Kyle.” But Southern Cross Austereo is oblivious to the power... of public pressure refusing to accept that this man’s reign of vulgarity has run its course with decent people simply fed up with this monster’s personal and threatening assaults on innocent and unsuspecting human beings. Surely at some point common sense and decency must prevail? Yet it seems that SCA remains unmoved by the mass exodus of 68 major sponsors who have withdrawn their advertising campaigns from 2dayfm in 2011 of which 28 have pledged to continue their boycott into 2012 banning station from running their advertisements on the Kyle & Jackie O show and website.

The list of public violations by Kyle Sandilands would rival that of any child’s to Santa. He recently shed kilos in preparation for his return to radio, but already the public is asking “has he shed the attitude?” We think not! Kyle Sandilands may try to curb his tongue but this man is in serious need of anger management and it will take more than a slap on the wrist and a well rehearsed apology by Austereo to convince the public that he is worth keeping “on air”.

Kyle Sandilands is by no means the first, nor will he be the last of notorious radio “shock jock” personalities but in the words of popular song lyric, if “video killed the radio star” then just think how much damage such radio star’s can cost its sponsors if its listeners turn to social media to vent their disgust? But it’s not just the public there have been many media personalities in the past, who have expressed disgust at Kyle’s appalling behaviour, and who are as equally perplexed as to how or why Kyle is allowed to get away with it, time and time and time again?

If you're not afraid of being called a “fat slag” or threatened that he may “hunt you down” please speak up against this type of inexcusable behaviour and help us in our campaign to keep the entertainment industry clear of moving violations such as Kyle Sandilands. It’s people like you who can influence those who choose to condone Kyle’s antics. As a respected media personality of good character and admirable following please let it be known (by adding your name or comments below, retweeting this message or any other public acknowledgement of your disgust at Kyle's behaviour) and help send the message that you won’t sit back quietly and allow this man to ruin an industry that deserves better! We need more people like you, not more vile like Kyle types!

Media Statement 13th Jan 2012

In late 2011, shortly after Kyle's personal attacks against a popular Australian journalist about her breast size, calling her a "piece of s---" and threatening to "Watch your mouth girl, or I will hunt you down." in response to her honest assessment of a TV program hosted by Kyle, SACK VILE KYLE was created on Facebook by a group of Australians who were fed up with Kyle's insincere apologies and Southern Cross Austereo’s defence of Kyle's comments. Since then SACK VILE KYLE has actively worked with change.org and Collective Shout to campaign the removal of Kyle Sandilands and the restoration of quality radio programming to our public air waves. With Kyle returning to the airwaves on Monday 16th January, SACK VILE KYLE will continue this campaign for as long as it takes for Kyle to be removed.

Following his latest vitriolic attack on a female journalist, Kyle Sandilands continues to provide his employers with more shock than jock. Indeed this one man misogynist band’s deplorable excuse for entertainment has led to public outcry on social media networks Facebook and Twitter, and has spurred the rise of a petition of more than 32,000 signatures all demanding the radio station 2dayfm clean up the public air waves and “Sack Vile Kyle” (http://www.change.org/petitions/2day-and-fox-fm-sponsors-cancel-advertising-until-kyle-sandilands-is-dumped-from-radio-vilekyle). But Southern Cross Austereo is somewhat slow to accept that this man’s reign of vulgarity has run its course and that people are simply tired of listening to both his and the stations’ excuses for his verbal outbursts.

Perhaps SCA executives feel that Mr Sandilands’ string of public violations is to be condoned, at least by their paying sponsors. They (SCA) certainly don’t care about the public’s best interests whose frustrations expressed in thousands of signatures, phone calls, emails, Facebook and twitter messages continue to go unheard, but for how long? How many more appalling displays of bad behaviour does that public have to endure? Is the long list of offences not long enough already?

April 2010
On The Kyle and Jackie O Show on 2Day FM, Sandilands and Jackie O interviewed three of golfer Tiger Woods’s former mistresses, with Sandilands asking one of them in reference to the size of the star's genitals if he was a ‘‘massive donkey’’. When she responded with yes, he asked her: ''Were you surprised, [saying] 'Man, you're half Asian, half black, obviously the half black is what's going on downstairs'?''

September 2009
On his radio show, Sandilands suggested Australian comedian Magda Szubanski, who was a spokeswoman for a weight-loss company, would lose more weight in a concentration camp. Szubanski is of Polish origin, a country where many of the worst Nazi concentration camps were located.

July 2009
A 14-year-old girl appeared on Sandilands' 2Day FM show, strapped to a lie detector to be questioned by Sandilands, Jackie O and the girl's mother. After the girl revealed she was raped at the age of 12 in response to a question from her mother, Sandilands said: ''Right ... is that the only experience you’ve had?'' Public outrage followed and Sandilands was sacked from his job as a judge on Australian Idol by Channel Ten.

October 2006
As a judge on Australian Idol, Sandilands described contestant Bobby Flynn as a ''full mong''. The term "mong'' refers to mongoloids and has been used in the past as a label for people with Down Syndrome. Sandilands' manager said at the time the comment was taken out of context and was a ‘‘slang term’’ and not meant to refer to people with Down Syndrome. A fortnight earlier he told contestant and eventual runner-up Jessica Mauboy she should ''lose the jelly belly'' if she wanted to succeed.

August 2006
On his radio show, Sandilands called a heavily pregnant journalist, Fiona Connolly, a ‘'fat toad'’, ‘'fat lying mole'’ and ‘'little cretin'’, after a column she wrote about faked phone calls on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

October 2005
As a judge on Australian Idol, Sandilands criticised the weight of contestant Kate DeAraugo (who went on to win the 2005 Australian Idol), telling her she had ''tuckshop lady arms''.

These examples are only a few but they are by no means in isolation yet each one is followed by a public apology by Sandilands’ employers (http://www.2dayfm.com.au/shows/kyleandjackieo/kyle-sandilands-statement-december-2011, http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/sydney-confidential/kyle-asandilands-and-jacki-o-return-to-air-and-apologise-for-lie-detector-controversy/story-e6frewz0-1225763076271, http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertainment/859555/kyle-sandilands-offends-again.) Anyone who even dares to criticise this man publicly is likely to bear the full brunt of his wrath but thankfully (for him) his employers will quickly step up with a public apology on his behalf. After all, Kyle Sandilands would never openly or genuinely agree to apologise unless under duress as he sees his retaliations as justified as a constitutional right of free speech. Perhaps someone needs to explain to Mr Sandilands that the right of free speech is mute when civil liberties such as public decency and safety are compromised.
